Hand Sucker

Isaiah is quickly building the habit of sucking on his hand. Yep - his hand. The whole thing. He starts on just a couple of fingers, then sucks a little more in, and more, and before you know it, the whole hand is in there. It's mostly when he's watching TV or being read a book. I haven't actually seen him sleeping with his hand in his mouth yet - but I'm sure it's only a matter of time. I guess maybe it was a little too early to take away his pacifier - but I'm not about to give it back now!

I had a thought the other day that I should just keep putting hand sanitizer on Isaiah's hands all day because that stuff tastes just plain nasty. But Richard quickly pointed out that it is also like 90% alcohol - so that might not be the way to go.

So I give this to you, genius readers of my blog, any ideas?

The alcohol is gone when the hands are dry. What is left is the other 10%. What is that?

when one of our boys had a major hands-down-his-pants habit, the dr told me to say nothing but just walk up, slide my arms under his (thereby popping the hands out of the pants), and give him a hug. the point being to provide whatever warm, snuggly feeling he's after without calling attention to the undesirable habit.
i think the hand sanitizer isn't a bad idea.

Snopes says the concern with hand sanitizer is real. But it's not really clear if it's in just the liquid form that it's so dangerous. Would it be OK for him if I was sure he had rubbed it all in? I'm not sure. And "not sure" isn't a good thing to gamble your child's safety on. Ya know?

I wouldn't risk it with the sanitizer. I like Angela's suggestion!

alice tried to eat her hands forever. Every time I saw her do it, I just took her hand out of her mouth, handed her a toy to chew or suck on and said, 'don't chew your hands.' (she was doing it because of the eczema - it was itchy). It sort of worked. I think hand sanitizer is a bad idea. I like Angela's idea too.

I was going to mention the hand sanitizer thing but you already found it on snoopes. I wouldn't do it, to be safe. I like angela's suggestion.

My son is always chewing on his fingers. I was thinking it's cuz he's still getting those 2 year molars, but I don't know.

Whatever happened to that nasty tasting stuff you put on thumbs to get kids to stop sucking them, thats actually made for that purpose? It worked for me back in the day.
